     David Osmond Olds was born on 28 May 1824 at Elmore, Lamoille, Vermont, USA.^1,2 He married Rosanna Hortense Seaman, daughter of Isaac Seaman and Christina Frantz, on 26 July 1844 at Livingston, Michigan, USA.^3,4 David Osmond Olds died on 24 March 1913 at Oregon, Clackamas, Oregon, USA, at age 88.²

     Rosanna Hortense Seaman was born on 10 May 1830 at Virgil, Cortland, New York, USA.¹ She married David Osmond Olds on 26 July 1844 at Livingston, Michigan, USA.^1,2 Rosanna Hortense Seaman was born in Cortland County, New York, probably in the town of Virgil. She was the daughter of the Reverend Isaac Seaman, a Methodist-Episcopal clergyman, and Christiana Frantz. Named after her grandmother Rosanna Hamilton Seaman, she was called Hortense within the family.

In 1844, Hortense was married to David Osmyn Olds in Livingston County, Michigan, and became mother to nine children named Sylvester Olds, Alexander Hamilton Olds, Franklin Marcellus Olds, Isaac Clarence Olds, David E. Olds, Almeda M Olds, Edward Olds, Melissa Olds, and Minnie Olds. Sylvester and Minnie both died in infancy.

Hortense lived a sad life. By the mid-1860's she had fallen into mental illness, and was committed to the Willard Asylum for the Chronically Insane, which was then a new and state of the art institution located near Romulus, New York. Hortense died there in February 1872 at age-41, likely never having seen any of her family again.

With the exception of their eldest surviving son Alexander Hamilton Olds who was old enough to work, David Olds gradually surrendered all his children to the Cayuga Asylum for Destitute Children in Auburn, New York, and quickly moved west. David Olds then lived briefly in Illinois where he remarried to a woman named Matilda Patton. David and his new family settled for some years in Nebraska before eventually moving further west to Oregon City, Oregon where he lived out the remainder of his life.

David Olds appears to have never again had any contact with his former wife Hortense or most of his children. A life narrative left behind by Alexander Hamilton Olds before his death in the 1920's indicates that he did at least once visit his father David and step-family while they were living in Nebraska.

Hortense is presumed buried in one of the many hundreds of numbered, but otherwise unmarked graves in the cemetery near the abandoned institution which is located on the shore of Lake Seneca, one of New York State's Finger Lakes. Maintenance responsibility for the old cemetery is in dispute. Due to state privacy laws and stigma still surrounding mental illness, burial records are under seal although many of the people involved have been dead for more than a century. The cemetery is maintained by volunteers. This memorial has been created in order to restore her dignity by restoring her name.³ Rosanna Hortense Seaman died in February 1872 at Romulus, Seneca, New York, USA, at age 41.³

     Isaac Seaman married Christina Frantz.² Isaac Seaman was born in 1805 at Newburgh, Orange, New York, USA.¹ He died in November 1860 at Mountain Dale, Sullivan, New York, USA.¹

     Christina Frantz married Isaac Seaman, son of Caleb Seaman and Rosanna Hamilton.¹ Christina Frantz was born in 1812.¹ She died in 1884.¹

     Vestalina Seaman was born on 20 December 1832 at Port Byron, Cayuga, New York, USA.¹ She died on 28 December 1906 at Middletown, Orange, New York, USA, at age 74.¹
