    Chet was born on November 16, 1938 in Montezuma the son of the late Chester C. and Golda (Allen) Helmer. He served in the US Airforce from 1956 – 1958. For 27 years he worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for IOUE #832 out of Rochester. He was a fire chief in Savannah.

    He is survived by his loving and supporting wife of 50 years Geraldine “Gerry” (Reading); his daughters Tina Helmer, Kelly (Tim) Carmon and Patty (Joe) McBride; his sons Richard J. (Linda), Donald (Lisa) Helmer and Gerald Helmer and Timothy Capron; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

    He is predeceased two sisters Edna (Howard) Sanders L. and Jean Helmer; his brother Richard L. (Ann) Helmer.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rena Helmer Smith; six daughters, Mrs. Mark Townsend of Auburn RD, Charlotte, Joann, Beverly, Sandra and Pamela, all at home; four sons. Dale in the Navy, Harold, Rodney, Edward, at home; four grandchildren; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert R. Smith of Seneca Falls; five sisters. Mrs. Vernon Hebb of Cumberland, Md., Mrs. Holmes Atkinson, Mrs. Robert Helmer, Mrs. Vernon Bennett, all of Montezuma, and Mrs. Carlton Worsham of Baltimore, Md. Services were held at 2.30 p.m. Wednesday at the Montezuma Methodist church, followed by burial in South Butler cemetery.
