- [S515] Unknown author, The Auburn Citizen, Location: Auburn, New York, Oct 15, 1924 The mystery surrounding the finding of Mrs. Clarence Dixon, 21, Syracuse colored girl drowned under a rowboat In the waters of the Barge Canal about a mile West of .Montezuma Village Saturday afternoon was given a new slant yesterday afternoon by the finding of the two companions of the girl, both drowned in the canal. Thoy were Philip Coyle 902 Montgomery Street and Percy Winters of Wilbur Avenue, Syracuse. The bodies were taken to Syracuse last night after autopsies had been performed by Coroner Paul M. Parker of Moravia and Coroner's Physician Dr. William Walsh. Coroner Parker held that the Dixon girl was dead when she struck the water and died from violence, accidental or otherwise. His decision in the other two cases was accidental drowning. The autopsies showed no marks of violence external or internal. The Dixon girl had a broken neck, the spine being fractured at the seventh vertebrae. GIRL WAS KILLED District Attorney Kenyon stated after the bodies of all three mixed up In the triple iragedy had been recovered that, beyond question the Dixon girl was killed, accidentally or otherwise, but, as both other occupants of the boat are dead, Mr. Kenyon holds that the case is virtually dropped. The bodies of the two men were recovered by Undertaker Archie McDonald of Syracuse, who has a grappling rig which has been successfully used in recovering drowned bodies from Owascc Lake. He was accompanied by Stuart and Matthew Coyle of Syracuse, brothers of Philip Coyle, and Pete Kite, also of Syracuse. The bodies were brought to tho Newfcirk morgue where the autopsies were performed. At the conclusion of same, the bodies of both were taken to Syracuse for funeral and burial services. Where Bodies Were Found. The bodies of the two drowned men were found 200 yards West of, the point wbere the overturned rowboat with the Dixon girl underneath was discovered. Last night George Booth, at whose home the trio stayed last Friday night, and Clarence Gay of Montezuma, held as material witnesses in the case, were released from their cells in the'county Jail on order of Distrjict Attorney Kenyon.home without commenting on his. He was a brother of Leo Coyle, who was killed about three years ago when hia taxicab was struck by a fast passenger train at a Belle Isle railroad crossing.
