[S515] The Auburn Citizen, Despondent because of.ill health, Mrs. Charles Higgins, 38, wife of Supervisor Higgins of the Town of Montezuma, shot herself through the lower part of the chest with a 38 calibre revolver about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon and died of the wound at 9:15 this morning. Mrs. Higgins, all alone at the time, committed the deed in the library in her home after which she went upstairs to ber bedroom where sac was-found by her son, Harold one-half hour later. Supervisor Higgins, who was in Auburn yesterday afternoon on business, was communicated with. Efforts were made to get a physician. At the time, D R. F. Zimmerman of that village was away and it was not until about 6 o'clock last evening that he went to the Higgins bome where he found Mi's. Higgins in a serious condition. - Held Out Hope for Recovery. Although in a serious condition, there was a hope held out for her* recovery with the result that the news of the shooting waa kept quiet Reports of the suicide were heard about Auburn shortly before noon but it was not until after 1 o'clock this afternoon that Coroner Forman received official notification of the shooting from Doctor Zimmerman who did not learn of the woman's death until his return home for dinner after finishng his calls through the country. Coroner Forman left for Montezuma this afternoon to make an investigation. The finding of the revolver in the library showed that the shooting had been committed, there. It was a known fact to the friends of the family that Mrs. Higgins had been in poor health for a year or more, having recently underwent an operation at Ithaca for goiter and -was subject to brooding over her illness. Early yesterday afternoon all of the family left home with the exception of Harold who did not leave to go to the village until 2 o'clock or thereafter. It was about 3:30 o'clock when Harold returned home to find his mother mortally wounded and be immediately rushed out of the house to tell the neighbors. Mrs. Higgins was weU known hi that part of the county having resided in Montezuma practically all her life. Her death will be mourned by numerous friends. Besides ber husband, Supervisor Higgins, she tc survived by two daughters, Miss Bertha and Miss Agnes Higgins and by two sons, Harold and Charles Higgins, all of Montezuma, by one brother, Charles Saunders of Spafford and by one sister, Mrs. Ruth Mead. The funeral will be held. Saturday afternoon at 2 o'ekiek at the family home- Rev. Mr.- Bradborn of Montezuma will officiate Interment will be made in the Village Cemetery. .
